It is the aircraft that refuses your chair

Airlines take the blame, but the thing that physically stops a wheelchair is the cargo-hold door of the aircraft on that leg. A regional jet door can be 40 cm shorter than a widebody one. Same airline, same booking, different answer.

Check the type, not just the airline. Your booking confirmation names the aircraft for each leg, and a long-haul flight sold by a major carrier is very often connected by a turboprop or regional jet. Those are the top of this list, and they are where chairs get left behind.

Tightest doors first

63 types where at least one airline publishes a size, extracted from 59 airlines’ own tables. Every number links to the page it came from. A door is an opening, not a promise — a chair that fits can still be refused on weight, shape or handling, and the figure is for the tightest variant.

How to use a door measurement

  • Measure the chair as it will be handed over, not as you sit in it. A backrest that folds and footplates that come off change the answer entirely.
  • Height is usually what stops you, not width. Battery-powered chairs are almost always required to travel upright, so they cannot be tilted through a short door.
  • Leave margin. A chair 2 cm inside the limit still has to be manoeuvred through by hand, at speed, by someone who has never seen your chair.
  • Ask what happens if the aircraft changes. Substitutions are routine, and one can turn a chair that fits into a chair that does not.
  • Where airlines disagree, believe the smaller number. They measure different doors on different sub-variants, and being wrong in the optimistic direction is what strands you.

None of these figures are ours. Each is what a specific airline published, on a page you can open, on a date we recorded. Where an airline prints an unlabelled pair of numbers without saying which is the height, we leave it out rather than guess — a guessed axis is how a reference tells someone their chair fits when it does not.
