Powered wheelchairs & batteries

The part that goes wrong. Battery chemistry and watt-hours decide whether your chair flies, and the rules differ depending on whether the battery can be removed.

Widerøe publishes an explicit maximum wheelchair size and weight per aircraft type (its own axis order "height + width x length"): Dash 8-100, -200 and -400 — 133 × 125 × 122 cm, max 300 kg; Embraer E190-E2 — 133 × 70 × 80 cm, max 155 kg; Dash 8-300 — no electric wheelchair at all, manual only, with no size published. Widerøe adds only that "there are limitations on the number of wheelchairs allowed" per flight; it does not say what happens once that limit is reached.

Worth knowing

The per-aircraft chair limits live in the Help Centre article "Wheelchair and assistance", not on the main Special assistance page — a traveller reading only wideroe.no's own travel-info pages would never see them. Two contradictions a human should re-check: (1) the Help Centre says there is NO watt-hour limit for a battery installed in the chair, while the Litiumbatterier page still shows a 160–300 Wh band for mobility aids with the battery fixed in the device; (2) the English PDF "Lithium Batteries for Personal Use as Baggage" puts "mobility devices" over 160 Wh in a Large row stating they must be carried as cargo under the IATA DGR and that "Widerøe does not carry dangerous goods as cargo, so other airlines must be used" — read literally that would refuse most powered chairs, which both the Norwegian web table and the Help Centre article contradict. Operational facts a wheelchair user should know: WCHC passengers may weigh no more than 120 kg (90–120 kg must be declared at booking); the Dash 8 fleet has no escape slides, so a passenger who cannot reach and use an emergency exit unaided — including jumping about 1.5 m to the ground — must travel with an assistant aged 18 or over who accompanies only one passenger. Widerøe is part of the Norwegian Air Shuttle group; nothing in this record is taken from Norwegian's own policy.
