Battery must be removed

For chairs with dry-cell or lithium batteries 'the battery can remain attached to the wheelchair; the power should be switched off and the battery disengaged'. But where the aid is specifically designed to allow the user to remove the battery (e.g. a collapsible device), removal is mandatory: a lithium battery then goes into the cabin, a non-spillable battery into the hold in rigid weatherproof packaging you provide. If the equipment has no deactivation procedure, the battery must be removed and the terminals insulated.

Dry-cell and gel batteries are accepted; the battery may remain attached to the wheelchair with the power switched off and the battery disengaged. Where the aid is specifically designed to let the user remove a non-spillable battery (e.g. a collapsible device) the battery must be removed, the terminals protected from short circuit, and carried in strong, rigid, weatherproof packaging in the aircraft hold — packaging the passenger must supply.

Wet / spillable batteries

'Wet-cell batteries – these are not allowed on board our flights.' The Conditions of Carriage state 'We will only accept mobility aids powered by non-spillable batteries or lithium batteries' and 'We will only carry dry cell, spill-proof batteries.'

Terminal protection & immobilisation

'No wheelchair/powered mobility unit will be accepted for carriage unless the power source is disconnected, terminals insulated, and wiring is properly stowed.' Terminals must be protected from short circuit (tape if exposed) and the electrical circuits inhibited — key removed, cable plugs disconnected or an inhibiting plug (e.g. an Airsafe plug) inserted. fastjet states 'a maximum size of 74 x 94 x 73 cm / 29.6 x 37.6 x 29.2"' for powered wheelchairs and electric mobility aids, without labelling the axes; the same page's convention for the dimensions you must supply is 'length x width x height', which is how the figures are mapped here. Treat 73–74 cm as the binding smallest figure and confirm the axes with fastjet. Carriage may be refused if the aid exceeds the cargo door dimensions.

Weight limit for a powered chair

'fastjet limits the number of powered wheelchairs or electric mobility aids to two per flight, weighing not more than 150 kg each.' The Conditions of Carriage add that carriage can be refused if 'the tare (unladen) weight of the mobility aid exceeds the aircraft loading limitations after all possible load-spreading options have been considered'. The same web page separately tells wheelchair users to 'ensure it does not exceed 32 kg' — verify with fastjet which applies to your chair.

Returned at the aircraft door

Only two powered mobility devices are accepted per flight, on a first-come-first-served basis, and at most three reduced-mobility passengers per flight. Wheelchairs and mobility aids that cannot be lifted manually into the hold are accepted only if both the departure and destination airports can load and unload them, and even then 'no guarantee can be made'. Battery-powered aids are only carried for a passenger whose own mobility is restricted.

For a battery-powered aid fastjet requires the wheelchair/mobility-aid type, dimensions, tare (unladen) weight, number of batteries installed and battery type at the time of booking. Requests by email need 7 days' notice. 'Failure to notify Us will result in the service being unavailable upon your arrival at the airport and You being refused carriage by Us.'

Charge for carrying the aid

Mobility devices carried free

'Passengers with Reduced Mobility are allowed to carry up to two (2) items of mobility equipment free of charge. This includes a walking stick etc, but only one foldable wheelchair will be allowed per Passenger.' The website phrases it as one wheelchair plus a small mobile aid unit such as a walking stick.

Conditions of Carriage 19.3.1.4: liability for destruction, loss, damage or delay 'is subject to rules and limitations set out in the Convention and the applicable Local Laws'. 19.5.3.3: after a damage assessment 'the maximum replacement value shall be determined in accordance with applicable local laws and/or the relevant international conventions. WCHC: 'You are completely immobile and require assistance going up and down steps and getting to and from your seat... Full assistance is offered through the airport, on and off the aircraft and in the cabin to and from your seat.' You must be accompanied by an able-bodied travel companion over 16, and approval to travel is required before the ticket is paid for.

The Conditions of Carriage add that certain seats cannot be purchased by passengers with specific requirements.

Fleet detail. fastjet is 'limited to accept items that will fit through the cargo doors of the aircraft', and the Conditions of Carriage list 'the mobility aid dimensions exceeding cargo door dimensions' as a reason carriage may be refused. The published maximum powered-aid size is 74 x 94 x 73 cm / 29.6 x 37.6 x 29.2 in with the axes unlabelled. fastjet Zimbabwe's published per-aircraft limits elsewhere on the site reference the Embraer ERJ145.

Worth knowing

fastjet.com is fastjet Zimbabwe Ltd's own site — the Conditions of Carriage PDF is issued by fastjet Zimbabwe (Issue 05 Rev 01, 1 June 2025) and the sporting-rifle policy is expressly 'on all flights operated by Fastjet Zimbabwe only'. Three things a human should re-check with the airline. (1) The website gives two different weight caps on the same page: 'ensure it does not exceed 32 kg' for a wheelchair, and 'not more than 150 kg each' for powered wheelchairs and electric mobility aids. Both are recorded, on the manual and electric records respectively, but they cannot both be right for a power chair. (2) The maximum powered-aid size '74 x 94 x 73 cm / 29.6 x 37.6 x 29.2"' is printed without labelling which figure is width, length or height; the axes here follow the page's own 'length x width x height' convention and should be confirmed. (3) Check-in deadline differs: the website says 90 minutes for reduced-mobility passengers, the Conditions of Carriage say no later than 60 minutes. Hard capacity limits matter here: a maximum of three reduced-mobility passengers and two powered mobility devices per flight, first come first served, and fastjet requires a medical certificate at booking to confirm the need for the wheelchair. Note the unusual split for removable batteries: a removable lithium battery goes into the cabin, a removable non-spillable battery into the hold in rigid weatherproof packaging the passenger must supply.
