Powered wheelchairs & batteries

The part that goes wrong. Battery chemistry and watt-hours decide whether your chair flies, and the rules differ depending on whether the battery can be removed.

Powered chairs accepted
Conditional

Accepted but carrier approval is required: in Tianjin Airlines' dangerous-goods table all three electric-wheelchair rows (lithium-battery, sealed wet / dry / NiMH battery, and non-sealed spillable battery) are marked 承运人批准 ✓ (carrier approval) and 通知机长 ✓ (captain must be notified). You must also bring the wheelchair's instruction manual and check it in at least 60 minutes before check-in opens.

Lithium-ion batteries
Conditional

电动轮椅(锂电池驱动): accepted with carrier approval and captain notification. The battery must be a type meeting UN Manual of Tests and Criteria Part III, 38.3. Removed and spare lithium batteries must travel in the cabin, insulated and protected (e.g. each in a protective bag).

Watt-hour cap — battery stays in the chair
Not published

Not verifiable. An earlier reading recorded "no watt-hour limit" here, but Tianjin Airlines serves its dangerous-goods table as images with no watt-hour text in the page at all, so the claim cannot be confirmed from the source. Because "no limit" is the reassuring answer, it is not published on an unverifiable basis. Ask Tianjin Airlines directly and get the figure in writing.

Battery must be removed
No

The battery may stay in the chair if the aid's design gives adequate protection, the battery is firmly attached and the circuit is disconnected per the manufacturer's instructions; otherwise it must be removed per those instructions. Note the general 160 Wh ban on lithium batteries in baggage expressly does not apply here: "额定能量超过160Wh的...锂电池(电动轮椅使用的锂电池另有规定)".

Paperwork the airline wants
Bring the electric wheelchair's instruction manual (说明书) to check-in; the lithium battery must carry the manufacturer's markings or the wheelchair manufacturer must supply a compliance certificate; sick passengers additionally need a Medical Diagnosis Certificate

"如果携带电动轮椅,请携带电动轮椅的说明书,至少在航班开始办理乘机手续 60 分钟前到值机柜台办理交运." For batteries in non-PED devices such as electric wheelchairs the battery body should show the manufacturer's details; if it does not, the equipment maker (e.g. the wheelchair manufacturer) may supply a compliance certificate. Unmarked, mislabelled, damaged, swollen, deformed or leaking batteries are banned outright.

If they damage your chair
Checked baggage destroyed, lost or damaged is compensated at the reduction in value or the repair cost, capped by the limit set by the PRC Civil Aviation Law and the applicable international conventions; a declared-value option exists

Domestic conditions of carriage art. 100: liability applies unless the loss is caused by force majeure, the nature or defect of the baggage, fair wear, or the passenger's own fault; if the actual value is lower than the cap, the actual value is paid; if the weight of the damaged item cannot be determined, compensation is calculated on the passenger's free baggage allowance. No mobility-aid-specific rule is published.

Fleet detail. Tianjin Airlines' general checked-baggage limits are 40 x 60 x 100 cm and 50 kg per piece, but wheelchairs are carried free and outside the baggage allowance and no separate wheelchair size or weight limit is published. No hold-door or compartment dimensions are given for the E190 / A320-family fleet.

Worth knowing

Chinese-language site only; every quotation above is translated from tianjin-air.com. The battery detail lives in section 五 of the dangerous-goods page, which is published as a table of images inside a JavaScript accordion — the numbers here were read directly from those images (dotCMS content id 8199a8cd-a354-470c-b75c-0bb19ccedf98, images uploaded 1 and 6 July 2026). Two things a traveller should notice. (1) Tianjin Airlines requires the carrier's prior approval for every kind of electric wheelchair, so a power chair is "conditional", not automatic. (2) The site's general ban on lithium batteries over 160 Wh explicitly carves out wheelchair batteries — "额定能量超过160Wh的充电宝、锂电池(电动轮椅使用的锂电池另有规定)" — so do not read 160 Wh as a wheelchair limit: an installed battery has no watt-hour cap, a removed one is capped at 300 Wh. Not published anywhere: on-board aisle chair, accessible lavatory, gate delivery, wheelchair size/weight limits, and any dedicated accessibility phone line or email.
