Who to contact

Transcribed from the airline’s own pages, exactly as it labels them.

Malaysia Airlines publishes no dedicated accessibility phone line — wheelchair and mobility-aid requests go through the 24-hour Global Customer Contact Centre, a Reservation & Ticketing Office or an appointed travel agent. At KLIA Terminal 1, special-handling check-in is at Level 5 counters B1/B2. MH does not currently serve the USA, but MHguardian reproduces the US DOT Part 382 Toll-Free Hotline for Air Travellers with Disabilities (1 800 778 4838 voice / 1 800 455 9880 TTY) and the Aviation Consumer Protection Division numbers (202 366 2220 voice / 202 366 0511 TTY).

Powered wheelchairs & batteries

The part that goes wrong. Battery chemistry and watt-hours decide whether your chair flies, and the rules differ depending on whether the battery can be removed.

Powered chairs accepted
Conditional

"You may bring a normal (manual) wheelchair or a battery-powered wheelchair (non-spillable wet battery, spillable wet battery, or lithium wet battery) subject to the below requirements and approval from Malaysia Airlines."

Lithium-ion batteries
Conditional

Accepted subject to approval. "The batteries must be of a type, which meets the requirements of each test in the UN Manual of Tests, and Criteria, Part III, subsection 38.3."

Watt-hour cap — battery stays in the chair
No stated limit

Explicit: "If the battery is not removed, there is no limit to the Wh rating for the installed battery(ies)."

Watt-hour cap — battery removed into the cabin
300 Wh

"If the battery is removed, the power rating of the battery must not exceed 300 Wh, or for a wheelchair/mobility aid that is fitted with two batteries required for its operation, each battery must not exceed 160 Wh."

Watt-hour cap — spare battery
300 Wh

"A passenger may carry a maximum of one spare battery not exceeding 300 Wh or two spares each not exceeding 160 Wh."

Spare batteries permittedmaximum number under any published configuration
2

Maximum two: one spare up to 300 Wh, or two spares of up to 160 Wh each. Note that for a NON-SPILLABLE battery Malaysia Airlines allows only one spare, and it travels in the cargo compartment.

Battery must be removed
Conditional

Lithium: removal is optional — an installed battery has no Wh limit, a removed one is capped at 300 Wh and travels in the cabin. Spillable: removal is required if a non-collapsible chair cannot be kept upright throughout. A mobility scooter or TravelScoot must be checked in with the battery removed and individually protected.

Non-spillable batteriesgel, AGM, sealed lead-acid, dry cell
Yes

Accepted. Battery terminals must be isolated to prevent accidental short circuits, e.g. by being enclosed within a battery container; the battery must be securely attached to the wheelchair. A maximum of one spare battery may be carried, in a strong rigid box provided by the passenger, and it travels in the CARGO compartment — not the cabin.

Wet / spillable batteries
Conditional

Accepted only if the aid "must be loaded, stowed, secured, and unloaded while always maintaining an upright position", with terminals isolated and the battery securely attached. If the aid is non-collapsible and cannot be kept upright throughout, the battery must be removed and packed in strong rigid packaging: sealed against leakage, restrained in the compartment, terminals protected, battery upright in compatible absorbent material sufficient to absorb all its liquid, and marked "battery–wet–with wheelchair" with Corrosive and arrow-up labels.

Terminal protection & immobilisation
Yes

For every chemistry: "Battery terminals must be isolated to prevent accidental short circuits e.g. by being enclosed within a battery container", and the battery must be securely attached to the wheelchair.

Paperwork the airline wants
Yes

Lithium batteries must meet UN Manual of Tests and Criteria Part III subsection 38.3, and carriage is subject to Malaysia Airlines' approval — so expect to evidence the rating and the UN 38.3 test.

Small lithium-powered personal mobility devices — hoverboards, airwheels, solowheels, mini-segways, balance wheels and other self-balancing devices — are banned from both checked and carry-on baggage on all MH flights worldwide, including charters and connecting passengers from other airlines. Lithium batteries are never allowed in checked baggage; removed and spare batteries go in the cabin.

Worth knowing

IMPORTANT SOURCING NOTE: malaysiaairlines.com's own 'Battery-powered wheelchair and mobility aid' section (Additional Restrictions) names the three battery types but its accordions are currently EMPTY of detail — verified against the page's AEM model.json, so this is a live CMS gap, not a fetch failure. The full battery conditions (300 Wh removed / no Wh limit installed / 1x300 Wh or 2x160 Wh spares / spillable-battery packing rules) are published only on MH's Salesforce-hosted self-service FAQ portal at mhexperiencedelight.my.site.com; the same articles are NOT present on askmh.malaysiaairlines.com. Treated as official MH content but a human should re-check that this portal is current. CONTRADICTION to re-check: the free-baggage FAQ says MH carries motorised wheelchairs free 'with dry or gel cell batteries only', while the wheelchair FAQ accepts non-spillable, spillable AND lithium batteries with approval — a lithium chair user should confirm both carriage and free carriage. Also: a mobility scooter must be checked in with the battery removed; hoverboards and similar self-balancing devices are banned outright. Malay-language (bm) pages exist but mirror the English ones and add nothing on mobility aids. 2026-07-30: the Salesforce-hosted help-centre article (a JavaScript shell to every automated fetch) was supplied by a human and read in full. It is the source of Malaysia Airlines' complete battery matrix, including the explicit no-watt-hour-limit rule for a battery that stays installed, and the seven-working-day notice period.
