Powered wheelchairs & batteries
The part that goes wrong. Battery chemistry and watt-hours decide whether your chair flies, and the rules differ depending on whether the battery can be removed.
« Si vous disposez d'une chaise roulante électrique, elle sera acheminée via notre service Fret » — an electric wheelchair is not carried as accompanying checked baggage but shipped as freight, so it may not travel on the passenger's own flight. Fleet detail. Air Calédonie publishes a maximum checked-baggage size of 30 × 70 × 50 cm and says items larger than that must go via the Fret service. The airline does not state that this limit applies to a wheelchair carried under the free mobility-device provision, but it is the only hold-size figure it publishes and it is small — a rigid chair will almost certainly exceed it.
Worth knowing
Air Calédonie is a domestic inter-island carrier (Nouméa/La Tontouta – Maré, Lifou, Ouvéa, Île des Pins, plus Port Vila). Two things a power-chair user must know. (1) An electric wheelchair is NOT carried as accompanying checked baggage: « elle sera acheminée via notre service Fret » — it is consigned as freight and travels on the first flight with space, so it can arrive separately from the passenger. (2) Carriage of a passenger with reduced mobility is subject to the carrier's prior agreement, requested at booking and at least 48 h before departure; if the request is only made at check-in the airline is entitled to refuse boarding. One manual wheelchair or walker is carried free in the hold on top of the baggage allowance, subject to space. Battery rules for mobility aids are limited to a single line requiring prior arrangement with the operator and an MSDS/FDS — no watt-hour caps, no removal or terminal rules. Air Calédonie also bans e-bikes, scooters and hoverboards from both hold and freight, but that ban is not written to cover mobility aids. Live animals are currently suspended and the airline is mid-transfer of domestic operations to La Tontouta, so ground arrangements are in flux.
